# What is a knowledge graph?

**Category:** Concept

**TL;DR:** A knowledge graph is a map of things (entities) — people, organizations, products, articles — and the relationships between them. In web terms, schema.org's `@graph` bundles the entities on a page so engines can slot your content into their bigger picture of the world. (It's not the same as Open Graph — see below.)

---

## What it is

Search and AI engines don't just store keywords; they store *entities* and how they connect — "this Person founded this Organization, which makes this Product." That web of connected facts is a **knowledge graph**. Think of a detective's cork-board: photos (entities) linked by string (relationships).

On your own pages, structured data can describe several entities at once — an Organization, the Author, the Article they wrote — and schema.org's `@graph` ties them together into one connected block instead of disconnected snippets. That helps engines understand not just *what* a page says, but *how it fits* with everything else they know.

---

## Why it matters

- **Entity understanding.** Engines that grasp *who* and *what* your content is about can represent and recommend it more accurately.
- **Authority (E-E-A-T).** Clearly linking authors, credentials, and your organization strengthens trust signals search and AI engines reward.
- **Disambiguation.** A graph tells engines *which* "Apple" or "Jordan" you mean — crucial for correct AI answers.

## Knowledge graph vs Open Graph — not the same thing

People constantly confuse these because both say "graph":

- **Knowledge graph / schema.org `@graph`** — the *entities and relationships* that describe what your content is about (the subject of this page).
- **Open Graph (`og:` tags)** — a separate protocol for *link previews*: the title, image, and description shown when a page is shared in iMessage, Slack, or LinkedIn.

Different jobs. MetaPilot generates both.

## How MetaPilot handles it

When a page warrants several entity types, MetaPilot combines them into a single schema.org `@graph` — Organization, Article, Person, Product, and more — so your pages present a connected, machine-readable picture rather than scattered tags.

## FAQ

**Is a knowledge graph the same as Open Graph?**
No — knowledge graph = entities and relationships about your content; Open Graph = social link-preview tags. Both matter, for different reasons.

**Is this the same as Google's Knowledge Panel?**
Related. Google's knowledge graph powers those panels; clear entity markup on your site helps engines build an accurate picture, though panels aren't guaranteed.

**Do I need to build a graph myself?**
No — MetaPilot assembles the `@graph` from your pages automatically.
